Web design and development has changed beyond recognition in the last 20 years, but one thing hasn't changed: a picture paints a thousand words. Here are some tips to make sure you make the most of your photos.

How big should my photos be?
Generally speaking, the photos from your digital camera or smartphone will be more than large enough for any contemporary website. Anything more than 1,900 pixels wide will be large enough and in many cases bigger than necessary. Your photos can never really be too large because a large file can be shrunk down without loss of quality. Only small images present a problem. You can almost always tell at a glance when s small image has been enlarged and the more you enlarge it, the uglier it looks.

I thought big photos were bad...
Yes and no. Large photos can make a big visual impact, but be careful about using the word "size". There's the size in pixel dimensions and there's also the file size. And the relationship between image dimensions and image file size isn't as simple as you might think. You can have very large images with relatively small file size as long as they are properly compressed. Compression removes the data that the human eye doesn't require. It's a bit like the difference between CD audio and an MP3 file - you can fit about 75 minutes of "red book" audio on a CD but something like 12 hours of MP3s on the same disc with only a small degradation in audio quality. And it's the same for uncompressed and compressed JPG files.

Doesn't my content management system take care of it all?
If you're used to uploading images to Facebook and Twitter, you'll know that you don't have to mess about with pre-processing your pictures to compress them. The website just magically does it all for you. That's because they don't want to waste bandwidth delivering bloated image files. But most content management systems, such as Wordpress or Opencart, won't automatically optimise your images for you. Wordpress does compress images, but not very much and it's exactly the same for every image you upload (although you can control this with various plugins). So if you upload very large files, you will slow down the website performance and that is harmful to the customer experience and to Google ranking.

So, how do I compress photos?
If you have Photoshop, then you should always save images by using the "Save for web and devices" option so that they are properly optimised to balance high quality and low file size, not the "Save" or "Save us" options. If you don't have Photoshop there are numerous other options. This article is a good place to start but of course if you don't want to get involved in all that, you've always got me!

Anything else I need to know?
While I'm on the subject of image files, you should always save images for the web without spaces in the filename. Use dashes instead. So instead of "my file name.jpg" your files should always be in the format "my-file-name.jpg" and aside from hyphens you should avoid punctuation like brackets, asterisks and especially question marks and ampersands as these are reserved characters in web development.
Some of my clients have had problems with outbound mail going to Hotmail and Yahoo! addresses this week.

If this has happened to you, I wanted to let you know about something that may help. This includes other addresses that are under the same "umbrella": Hotmail includes outlook.com, hotmail.co.uk, live.co.uk, live.com and msn.com addresses. And Yahoo! looks after email for BT Connect and Sky.

If you're able to pass these instructions on to people then they may find it helpful:

Hotmail

If you are able to make contact in some other way with correspondents who use Hotmail, it may help to ask them to add you to their "Safe Senders" list.

Log in to Hotmail (these days it's known as outlook.com)

Click the cog icon in the top right

Select "Options"

In the left-hand menu, choose Mail > Junk email > Safe senders

In the right-hand panel you may already have a list of emails. There is an input box at the top marked "Enter a sender or domain here"

In that box, type either a full email address (someone@example.com) or a domain (example.com) and then click the little "+" icon

When you have finished adding domains or email addresses you MUST then click the Save icon at the top.

Remember: If you don't click save, your Safe senders list WILL NOT BE UPDATED.

Yahoo!

The Yahoo! Mail method is less intuitive than Hotmail.

Log in to Yahoo! Mail

Place your cursor over the cog icon to open the Settings menu and choose "Settings"

From the left-hand menu select "Filters"

Click the "Add" button

Enter a name for your filter such as "Whitelist No.1"

Next to "From" select "contains" from the drop-down and then on the right type in either a full email address (someone@example.com) or a domain (example.com)

The default filter is "Then move this message to... Inbox" and you can leave this unchanged

Click the Save button

Click Save again

I appreciate that in most cases it won't be possible to pass on these instructions, but even if it helps with one or two people, hopefully it is worthwhile me telling you.Jon Ewinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03649621388151027120noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8175998065678472561.post-63330254590488427382016-03-30T17:26:00.000+00:002016-03-31T16:14:10.549+00:00SOLVED: What's a DEFRA-Approved Woodburning Stove?

I was asked to write an article for the Stove World UK website about DEFRA-approved woodburning stoves.

In essence, this article just needs to explain what a DEFRA-approved woodburning stove is, why some woodburning stoves are approved and others are not, and most importantly, why you should care if you are contemplating purchasing one.

The Short Answer

The answers to all of these questions are not that complicated. In short, there are two reasons for buying a DEFRA-approved woodburning stove: one is because your house is in a place where you're not allowed to have a woodburning stove unless it's DEFRA-approved. So that's pretty straightforward and frankly you don't need to know any more than that. The other reason is because you think you (or the environment) might benefit from the features you'll find on a DEFRA-approved stove. And obviously you need to know a little bit more about them before you decide if a DEFRA-approved stove is right for you.

Good sense and practical experience will tell you that the best place to start is by searching Google for information, but just for a giggle I thought I'd start with the DEFRA website. Or Defra, as they call it. Going off on a tangent if I may, at what point does an acronym become a word that is grammatically permissible to write in title case? The British Broadcasting Corporation isn't "Bbc" and the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation isn't "Hsbc". Maybe it only becomes a word when you can speak it out loud because it's got a pronounceable sequence of vowels and consonants? But, to coin a phrase, I digress.

Exploring the Defra Home page

In case you don't know, Defra (or DEFRA) stands for the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs.

Defra doesn't actually have its own website. There's one big gov.uk website for all government departments, each with its own sort-of Home page and a bazillion other pages. The Defra home page (www.gov.uk/defra) contains 135 links, so there's a lot to take in. It's broken up into several sections. At the top there's a block of links to mostly unconnected subjects, which are presumably the things that the Defra webmaster thinks are the most likely reason for you be visiting, including "Pet travel: entering/returning to the UK", "Get your dog microchipped" and "Rural grants and payments". Nothing about woodburning stoves but it's early days yet.

There's a section of press releases and news stories; then "latest" news. So far as I know, there haven't been any recent developments in woodburning stove regulation, so I feel it's safe to skim over this. There's a "What we do" section with a link to "Environmental quality". This seems like a good bet. The reason Defra takes an interest in woodburning stoves is because they burn fuel. Burning fuel, no matter how you do it, has an impact on the environment to some degree. So I'll come back to that. Next there are social media links. They could be good for a laugh. So I'll come back to those, too.

Next, there's a Policies section. I'm not seeking to change the regulation of woodburning stoves, so I probably don't need that. Then there's a Documents section split into four subsections (if you love documents, you're gonna love subsections). One of these is presumably going to contain documents about stoves, so I'll come back to that one, too.

The next part of the Home page contains brief profiles of Ministers and management with links to pages containing more details about them; no use to me. Then a Contact section. Maybe I can email them and they'll tell me where to find more information? Hmm. That will probably be a last resort. It says "We aim to reply to emails or letters within fifteen working days". It's Wednesday March 30th today. So if I email them now it could theoretically take until Tuesday April 19th. There's a list of links to "Corporate information" and links to "Jobs and contracts" information. That doesn't sound useful. There's a Freedom of Information section. So far as I know, woodburning stove regulations are not shrouded in secrecy, so nothing there for me. And finally there's a "list" of "High profile groups within Defra". There's one group on the list of "groups", so it's a bit of a misnomer - perhaps they're hoping some of their other groups will one day become high-profile enough to warrant inclusion.

So I have discovered three possible avenues of further research. The Environment Quality page, the Social Media section (will it take 15 working days to get a tweet from Defra? It would be interesting to find out) and the Documents section.

Environmental Quality

I click on Environmental Quality and I'm taken to a list of 40 links to documents, all published in the last month-and-a-bit. And at the bottom it tells me it's the first of 12 pages. The links have titles like "Exning Estate Company: application made to abstract water" and "SR2015 No 2: storage and handling of crude oil". The word stove does not appear and based on what I've seen, I'm not inclined to proceed to page two. However, there's a search box. That's bound to yield the information I need. Right?

I type in "woodburning stoves". Zero results. But "wood burning stoves" gives me two results. One of them is "High pollution episode warning: First 'summer-smog' of 2011" - doesn't sound pertinent. But the other is "Defra guidance on Local Authority Pollution Control (LAPC) regime". For a moment I thought that sounded promising. But I should have known better.

From what I can tell, this is very definitely not a document telling me which woodburning stoves are approved by Defra for use in a smokeless zone and which are not. In fact, it appears to be advice for local authorities on how to make sure factories are compliant with air pollution restrictions. The word "stove" does not appear, but the word "wood" appears a few times. The search results page clearly says "2 documents containing wood burning stoves" but my guess is that "wood" was enough to make the list. In other words, the search results page is lying to me.

Defra Documents

The documents section is broken up into Our announcements, Our consultations, Our publications and Our statistics. I don't think I want statistics but I'm not sure what section I do want. A quick look at Consultations reveals it to be what it sounds like - reports on completed public consultations and ways to contribute to ongoing public consultations. In other words, no use to me. The Announcements section has links to 1,365 announcements but, like the Environmental Quality section, it also has a search box. This time I get 55 results when I search "wood burning stoves" but I'm probably in the wrong place - these are all press releases and speech transcripts and not a single one has the word "stove" in the title. Next I try Our publications. The search brings up 28 results. Again, not a single one has the word "stove" in the title. I'm clearly not going to find anything that is specifically about stoves.

Social Media or "How do I microchip my tortoise?"

Okay, I am not expecting much, but having failed to find anything on Defra's website, let's try Twitter. Here's my tweet to them at 5.30pm on March 30th 2016. Let's see if I get a response:

@DefraGovUK I understand there are certain wood burning stoves that are Defra approved. Is there a page on your website that explains this?

And it turns out they have a separate Twitter account for Air Quality, so I thought I'd try that, too:

@DefraUKAir I understand there are certain wood burning stoves that are Defra approved. Is there a page on your website that explains this?

In the meantime, there's the Defra Youtube channel. Perhaps here's a video that tells you all about woodburning stove compliance. Yeah, right. There are dozens of videos on their channel dating back eight years, but nothing that mentions stoves. If you want to watch a video about Defra's Chief Scientific Adviser talking about neonicotinoids then you are in luck. But woodburning stove regulations? Nothing.

Having a look at Defra's Facebook page there's not much evidence of interaction between Defra and the general public. There are of course the typical random and badly-written questions and rants from visitors to the page such as "How do I microchip my tortoise?" and the Reviews page shows that Disgusted of Tonbridge Wells is alive and well. Defra's Linkedin page is much the same - it's clear that I'm not going to find any information about stoves. The research will have to continue tomorrow., In the meantime I'll await a response from one of Defra's Twitter accounts. You never know...

Update: March 31st

Predictably, there has been no response from Defra directly, but the Great British public has come to my aid in the form of Alistair Dorman-Smith, a Geordie exile and fellow web developer in Oxfordshire, who rapidly responded "you probably want the defra smoke controls website" and sent me a link to this page on the gov.uk website.

In fact it's not on the Defra website. The breadcrumb trail for the page links to Home, Housing and local services, Safety and the environment in your community, so it's no wonder I didn't find it.

The page is called "Smoke control areas: the rules" and it contains a link to a Defra page that lists all of the appliances that you can use for burning wood even in a smokeless zone.

So, no thanks to the Defra website but courtesy of a website designer in Oxfordshire, I'm really getting somewhere. But does the site actually tell us anything other than which woodburning stoves are Defra-approved? Like, for example, why Defra-approved stoves are Defra-approved and the rest are not?

You have to exercise a little imagination when you visit The Wren School on the Bath Road in Reading.

Right now it's a few temporary structures surrounded by a vast building site. The brand new Reading secondary school opened its doors in September for the very first day and so far it only accommodates Year 7 students (age 12), but those youngsters will form the foundation of a very ambitious new institution built to service the needs of the growing West Reading community.

Next year they'll have Year 7 and 8. And in 2017 they'll have Years 7, 8 and 9. And those lucky young people will be moving into a brand new, purpose-built school with state-of-the-art facilities. By the time they reach Sixth Form age, there will be more than 1,200 students at The Wren School.

inframes.com was commissioned to build a new website for The Wren School to take over from the interim site that serviced their needs before they opened their doors. We were given the go-ahead at the start of term and the site went live today, November 11th.

The design imperatives were simplicity and accessibility, with high-contrast colouring and clear navigation, for desktop, tablet and mobile devices. And we've made the best use of the bright colours from the school logo and the photos taken by teachers in class to make the site lively and youthful but seriously professional. We built the site using Wordpress, at the school's request, and we used Bootstrap as the framework under the hood.

Schools don't have inexhaustible budgets, so another imperative for The Wren School was that their website should be simple to update, allowing them to take over immediately, even by staff with minimal experience of Wordpress. But of course we're always here to help if we're needed, because we never hand over a website without the offer of free, no-strings help and advice.

We're very honoured to be selected for such a prestigious project, especially as The Wren School is less than a mile from the inframes office, making both institutions very much a part of the same proud and thriving community.

Work in Progress

We often start the design process by building "wire frames" that allow us to agree the specifics of the website structure with the client before we move on to the fun stuff like colours, fonts and photography. The wire frames are used to make vital decisions about layout, dimensions and navigation so that the graphic designer doesn't waste time at the next stage.

We currently use Balsamiq to make our wire frames. Here's what they look like:

You might notice blue, dashed arrows overlaying some of these drawings. These are used for annotations around the layout. The wire frame is a good stage of the process not just to show what we're going to do but to explain to the client why we think it's the wisest way to do whatever we're doing.

In common with a lot of web hosts, we've been finding recently that Wordpress login pages are often falling victim to so-called "brute force attacks" where the site is bombarded with log-on attempts, often many times per second, in the hope of gaining access to the site through sheer fluke by using a combination of commonly-used letters and numbers.

Wordpress is of course a victim of its own success in the sense that there are so very many Wordpress installations around the world, making it an obvious target for hackers.

We always encourage customers to use complex passwords that would be near impossible to guess. However, this in itself does not negate the effects of a brute force attack, because while the attacks go on, the performance of the site - and in turn the whole server - can be affected. If it goes on long enough, the server will almost certainly grind to a halt eventually and will need to be reset.

With this in mind, we're installing and testing plugins on our customers' Wordpress websites free of charge to help tighten up security.

The only difference you will probably notice is that you'll now be asked to complete a "captcha" form when you log on. Thanks to the new plugin, if more than three unsuccessful logon attempts are made in the space of five minutes, the originating IP address will be blacklisted.

It goes without saying that whenever you log on to your own Wordpress website, you ought to check your records to ensure you're using the right password if you're not 100% sure of it, otherwise you may find yourself a victim of your own website security protocol. But don't worry - if that ever does happen you can just let us know and we will of course remove your IP address from the blacklist.

We can only apologise for this small added inconvenience, but hopefully you can understand that the right course of action is to try to protect everyone sharing our servers from these potentially catastrophic attacks. We've downloaded and played around with a variety of different security plugins and we hope we've identified the best balance of protection and user-friendliness, but of course we welcome your feedback.
Broken mobile phone? The Gadget Lab has four little words to reassure you that it's not the end of the world.

As part of my work with Wildfire HQ I am working for a fascinating, albeit anonymously-named company called FMS Group, which specialises in what's called "forensic digital investigation".

Big Brother Stuff

FMS works with law enforcement agencies to extract evidence from mobile phone handsets that might be used in a criminal investigation. For example, engineers can examine the data on a phone and, when combined with data and call records from mobile phone network operators, they can tell you where a phone was located when a text message or phone call was made or received. Those engineers can then act as expert witnesses to give evidence in court under oath if necessary.

In their video presentation (see below) you can see how the movement of a phone in a criminal case in Preston could be cross-referenced with images from traffic cameras to identify the licence number of a vehicle in which the mobile phone user was travelling. It's very clever, Big Brother stuff.

Introducing the Gadget Lab

Unsurprisingly, customers of FMS Group tend to be organisations such as the Crown Prosecutor, law firms, the defence industry and large corporations. But FMS has launched a new online service called Gadget Lab which is aimed squarely at you and me - which is to say, you and me when we're having a very bad day.

When your mobile phone, tablet or iPod has broken and you're unable to access some vitally important contacts - or irreplaceable photos and videos - then you need someone you can trust to retrieve that important data for you.

Four Little Words

The Gadget Lab website has a friendly and approachable designed to reassure us when we're feeling desperate. The site's opening message is four very encouraging words: "All is not lost". Even if your phone is broken beyond repair, it's often possible to retrieve your data. So, if the worst happens, you can pop your phone in a padded envelope and send it off. Gadget Lab will charge you £24.99 to assess the device and if all you want to retrieve is something text-based, like messages or contacts, then that's all you'll pay.

Four Big Services

Gadget Lab offers four main services. They can rescue your data, they can remove or reset forgotten passwords for about £50, they can transfer data from your old device to a new one for £45, or they can fix your mobile phone. Or some combination of the above, depending on exactly what's wrong.

Mobile phone repairs are of course sometimes impossible and often less than cost-effective. In some cases, you could spend so much money getting your phone fixed that you might as well buy a new one. But Gadget Lab can fix a dodgy USB port (which will cost you somewhere in the region of £40) or broken iPhone screen (£70 or thereabouts) or get the battery charging when it's stopped taking a charge (around £30, depending on the make and model).

Super-Sleuthing Boffins from a Data Detective Agency

Whatever happens, if your phone or tablet needs mending, no one can tell
you how much the repair is going to cost unless they've examined it in
person. One of the FMS engineers will look it over and assess the problem and
give you a fair price for repair, including the best quality spare parts
where necessary.

And with Gadget Lab, your device gets the attention of a qualified boffin employed by a super-sleuthing forensic mobile data detective agency. How cool is that?
Last week we launched Pangbourne-based florist Green Parlour into the mobile era with a new website.

What We Did

Visually, the new greenparlour.com isn't a big leap onwards from the old greenparlour.com, but under the bonnet this website is completely different - the old site was built on a proprietorial ecommerce platform while the new site is fully converted to Wordpress using Woocommerce for the all-important shopping basket system and the Worldpay payment gateway extension for payment processing.

An extensive modification of the free and flexible Wordpress twentyfifteen theme, the whole site is made mobile-friendly using Bootstrap so that it looks good and, most importantly, functions perfectly, on anything from a high-res desktop computer to the smallest screen mobile.

Why We Did It

This conversion isn't just about bringing the technology up to the latest industry standard - it's really about setting it free from its shackles.

Thanks to our work, Green Parlour's highly creative lead florist Emma Sampson can now take charge of her own website in a way that had always been frustratingly difficult or impossible before. Using the universally-recognised tools provided by Wordpress, Emma is already bringing her vision for the site direct to Green Parlour customers without relying on third parties to unlock the mysteries of her own website.

About Green Parlour, Pangbourne, Reading, Berkshire

Green Parlour supplies a range of freshly-made bouquets for any occasion which can be delivered same-day in the Reading area for only £5 or nationwide for just £10.

Of course, their wedding floristry service is second to none, as you might expect from a firm who were honoured to be one of those invited to provide floristry services for the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton in 2011.

But despite their pedigree, Green Parlour prides itself on offering reasonable prices for their services. Bouquets start from just £25 and local businesses can receive a fresh delivery of Green Parlour flowers every week for as little as £25 per week, invoiced monthly. See the Areas We Cover page if you'd like to find out if your location is eligible.

Whether you need flowers for your office reception desk, the counter at a hair salon, the lobby of a hotel or artfully arranged in the windows of your pub or restaurant, Green Parlour can supply long-lasting and beautiful flowers and plants for your business, matching the best quality London florists, but at Berkshire prices.

For several months, Google have been sending out emails to webmasters with the title "Fix mobile usability issues found on [your domain inserted here]".

In some cases, these can be a bit worrying, because they say things like "Google systems have tested 100 pages from your site and found that 100% of them have critical mobile usability errors".

Google warns you "These pages will not be seen as mobile-friendly by Google Search, and will therefore be displayed and ranked appropriately for smartphone users."

Which is another way of saying that you're potentially missing out on mobile users, because when they search the web, they probably won't find your site – and they may well find a competitor's.

In practice, this means the site wasn't built with mobile devices in mind and so the links are probably too small and too close together for people to be able to click on. And the text is too small to read without zooming in.

Theoretically, your site will be missing out on mobile users, because when people search Google on their phone, they probably won't find it –they will find a competitor's site.

Don't panic - nothing has changed on the site and there are no faults that need to be fixed as such, it's just that Google has started a programme of sending out emails to the webmasters of sites that are not yet "mobile-friendly".

As a major mover in the mobile 'phone market, Google has a vested interest in making the mobile internet experience better for everyone - hence the inflammatory language they're using in their mailout, with words like "fix" and "critical... errors" to scare webmasters into getting up to date.

There are simple steps you can take to solve this. Inevitably it will involve an investment in bringing the site up to date but on the upside you'll be improving the experience for all your website visitors and quite possibly increasing sales or enquiries.
Here's the latest update from Robert, the system administrator, this morning:

Having blocked most of the attacks throughout the night we managed to
remove it from most of the network but the attack is still ongoing on
two IPs 62.197.38.70 and 62.197.38.199 – the shared hosting IPs.

Both of these IPs are blackholed at the moment as the DDOS team is struggling
to scrub the traffic successfully due to the complexity of this attack.
Everything else apart from the above two IPs should be performing as
expected but service may be slightly slower due to the work on the
routers and switches. Our senior network engineer is still working with
the DDOS team to customize the filters/rules to block the last of the
attack and we hope to update you soon to say its been completed.

More informally, Robert has described this as "the mother of all attacks", so it really is an exceptional situation.

If your website is offline right now, it's because your domain is on the first of those two IP addresses: 62.197.38.70

Email has been working fine throughout this period - it's only website traffic that is currently affected.

This incident is not connected to the ongoing migration of services away from the HELM server, which has already begun and will continue between now and the end of 2014 when the HELM server will be decommissioned.

Update from the system administrator at 3.00pm:

Unfortunately this server is still under heavy attack and we have to block the IP completely while it is being mitigated so that it does not affect the rest of the network.

We then switch it back on to see if traffic is at an acceptable level. If not, we have to disable again and block more IP addresses.

I'm afraid this is an ongoing process as attackers used compromised computers of innocent people to do the attacks, and as you block one IP address, another pops up to take its place.

Update 6pm

We are still blocking the main shared server IP to protect the sites from these malicious attacks whilst we do more work on our firewalls. This afternoon was another attack from a different source (Korea) which has been targeting only our firewall. The high availability configuration we run is working but the load its coming under is huge due to the size of the attack. The firewalls are back online now and we are seeking to install a second pair which should allow us to spread and clean the traffic and open up the shared IP addresses again, the rest of the network and services are live and functioning.

The NTT predictive service we joined the network to last night is also removing over 80% of the traffic to let through the clean traffic, but 13k packets per second DDOS attacks are still getting through which is knocking out the server connections every time we bring the main shared server IPs back up. We have 3 engineers from our side and 4 from NTT all working on finding a resolution asap. Im afraid that all we can say.

Wednesday 9.25am

Affected websites have now been restored, but the admins are still working on overall performance so please expect the service to continue to improve throughout the day.

Latest update from Robert on the front line this morning at 8.30am:

We are totally on top of it now, found the signature of the attack and blocking is still ongoing. We had to restrict packet sizes through our core switches to stop them in the end but this is meaning that some sites still aren't loading before timing out. Shouldn't be much longer im told whilst we remove these rules.
36+ hours straight, we are all definitely feeling it now...

Thursday 6.10pm

The server has continued to suffer problems due to the ongoing attacks and some clients' sites are unfortunately almost completely inaccessible. Here's the latest from Robert, the system administrator.

We have had to block another IP on the shared server which came under attack this morning. As we started to remove the scraping rules to allow things like FTP and let the network be accessible for more locations it hit us again, this time with a different signature.

As a result of the ongoing problems, we've accelerated the migration of domains away from the server, which was due to happen progressively at a relatively sedate pace over the next four weeks. Watch this space for further updates if you haven't already heard from me in person.

Saturday November 29th 1.35pm

It's been a heck of a week and there has been a great deal of disruption to various services at different times, but as a result of migrating websites away from HELM, along with the ongoing efforts of the system administrators, the vast majority of services have now been restored. But the attack has not stopped and so work to mitigate its effects is continuing. Again, contact me directly if you have any questions and in the meantime keep watching this space.

What a lovely surprise to receive this thoughtful gift hamper from specialist travel company Sherpa Expeditions this morning.

We've been helping to look after Sherpa's interests on the web for more than a decade but when the worldwide walking holiday company was snapped up by the World Expeditions Travel Group back in 2012 it was only a matter of time before the site was migrated to the company's central web development team in Australia.

All the very best wishes for the future to everyone at Sherpa Expeditions. It has been a pleasure.

FYI The new Sherpa website went live this month and to mark the occasion, Sherpa currently has a special offer cutting 10% off all 2015 Active Holidays so book now.

PS. We are delighted to still be supporting our long-term and highly valued client Sherpa Van, which provided accommodation and baggage transport services for walkers on the Coast to Coast walk, the Cotswold Way, Pennine Way, Dales Way,

Believe it or not, yes it is" border="0" src="http://www.inframes.com/images/blog/eu-cookie-law.jpg" title="Is the EU Cookie Law Still a Thing? Believe it or not, yes it is" />

Believe it or not, yes it is.

And in case you're still thinking "my site is okay, because I don't use cookies", be aware that Google Analytics cookies are covered by the EU Cookie law and so legally, since they are not essential for the functionality of your site, you have a responsibility to tell people that you are using them and give visitors the option to leave your site before a cookie is issued.

I'm not aware of anyone having been prosecuted for contraventions of the cookie law, as yet, but of course that doesn't mean it will never happen.

As you can imagine, the likely recipients of prosecution would probably be companies who are deliberately using cookies in a dishonest way in order to gather information about users that those users would not have volunteered.

One can only assume that the likely course of action in the case of an average website - ie. one that uses cookies in a harmless but non-compliant way - would be a warning to the website owners that they must become compliant immediately or face prosecution.

But of course, a contravention is a contravention and I imagine the authorities have to take it seriously when any complaint is levelled against a company that is not compliant.

Quick and easy options to make the whole thing go away include the free Cookie Control code or Google's own Cookie Choices code. Either can probably be configured and set up on your site in under half an hour.Jon Ewinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03649621388151027120noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8175998065678472561.post-80461456614629208712014-07-15T17:14:00.001+00:002014-07-15T17:16:08.495+00:00Getting rid of Wordpress spam comments

To get rid of comments, go to the Comments page here: yourdomain.com/wp-admin/edit-comments.php

And for each bit of spam, check the box next to it down the left-hand side.

Then select Mark as Spam from the Bulk Actions menu.

Then just continue with the next page of Comments and repeat.

The recognised way to stop comment spam is to use Akismet, which is one of only two plugins that comes pre-installed with Wordpress. However, while effective, that requires an annual subscription.

Recently, I've found considerable success using a plug-in called Anti-Spam for Wordpress, which is free. It's relatively low-tech and in due course, if it becomes popular enough, spammers will undoubtedly start to find a way around it,but for now it seems to be working very well on 100% of the sites on which I've tested it.

For some time now I have refused to accept the prompts to use the "new look" BBC radio player website interface and I was disappointed to discover recently that the old one had been retired and I'm no longer given the choice.

Too Many Clicks

Suffice to say, the new version just isn't as good, because it makes every listening choice harder to find.

Organising large amounts of information is very difficult and on any given day the BBC have many programmes you can listen to. But what's galling is that this information used to be organised so well. It was intuitive and easy. The focus of the new design is to make programmes more accessible to mobile devices, but it has sacrificed much of its intuitive ease in the cause of progress.

What is the Book of the Week?

For example, looking at the array of available Radio Drama programmes on the site right now, they include "Drama on 3", "Classic Serial", "Book at Bedtime" and "Book of the Week".

Fair enough, but what exactly are they? What is the Book of the Week? I have to click it to find out.

As for the Book at Bedtime, I click on it and go to a new page to find out that the earliest available episode is Part 11 of 20. If I knew that episode 1 had expired already, I needn't have bothered clicking on it.

With the old system, the names of the books being read and the plays being performed were available in the Drama listings, not just the generic umbrella series title. Moreover, the page told me which episode was the latest and there was a little link labeled "5 more" or "3 more" which I could click on to expand without leaving the page.

Another example right now is Casino Royale.

Seeing the title, I think to myself: "Sounds good" and so I click on it (count: 1 click)

which takes me to episode 5. But I want to listen to episode 1. So I click on the Episodes tab (count: 2 clicks).

Then I have to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page to find episode 1, because episode 10 is at the top. I've got two hours left to listen to episode 1. So I click on episode 1 (count: 3 clicks).

That has a graphic saying "Listen Now", so I click that (count: 4 clicks).

With the old system, those four clicks would have been reduced to two or, at most, three.

It was entirely superior to this new system, which requires me to click back and forth between pages to find what I want to listen to.

That's not all. The Casino Royale episode 1 page doesn't have a link to episode 2. So I have to go back to the Episodes tab to click on the episode 2 link. Another two clicks where once there used to be one.

Worse is to come.

I click on Charles Chilton - Journey Into Space (count: 1 click).

The current programme is episode 4, but I want to hear it from the beginning. I click on the Episodes tab (count: 2 clicks).

There are three different series available. I have to click back to find out which series is currently being broadcast (count: 3 clicks).

Having ascertained that it's a series called "Operation Luna" I go back to the list (count: 4 clicks)

and click on the right series (count: 5 clicks).

On this page for some reason there's not a list of episodes, but there's a carousel in which episode 4 is displayed by default. So now I have to click to get to episode 3 (count: 6 clicks),

then episode 2 (count: 7 clicks),

then finally episode 1 (count: 8 clicks).

Another example of system failure is Ben Moor - Undone. I clicked on that to find out more only to be told "This programme is not currently available on BBC iPlayer Radio". Why is it in the list, then?

The formula is simple. More clicks = a worse user experience.

I realise the old version of the radio player system is never going to return but I strongly advise the BBC to reinstate some of the useful functionality that interconnected radio programmes in a meaningful way.

On the upside, I'm really pleased to see that song titles and artist names are now displayed in real time when I listen to music radio, rather than having to wait till the following day to see a full tracklisting. That is a big improvement that doesn't impact on me finding what I want and it's a delight.

Part Four: If you think you think it's expensive hiring a professional...

We’re all affected by looks, consciously or otherwise. When we are standing outside a pub or restaurant, we size it up based on appearances. If we’re contemplating a fry-up to help get over a hangover, then we’ll be looking for something very different to when we’re planning an anniversary dinner or looking for a venue for a business meeting. But whatever we’re looking for, we know it when we see it because we’ve learned to look for key indicators that tell us what to expect when we walk through the door.

We might not be able to list those key indicators off the top of our heads, but we have a feel for them.

In design, there are certain typefaces that complement one another. There are colours that suit a particular type of business or target market. There is a language that works well in the corporate market which differs when you are communicating with the public or with a small business. And there are images which confirm your investment in quality while others shriek the words “clip art”.

In business, we strive at all times to appear professional. And these days your website very often forms the first impression of your company. In many cases, all it needs to do is meet expectations. If I want to buy a product or service that you sell, then by coming to your website I have started out by being open to do business. All you need to do is not disappoint me.

Now, if you run a restaurant for a living, then you can’t eat out without scrupulously analysing the food, service, décor, location, menus and price. As a website designer, I tend to look at everything with a designer’s eye. And of course I know not everyone does that.

So let’s say for a moment that I’m not a designer. When I arrive at your site I should be thinking “Yep, that’s what I was looking for”. Maybe I’ll browse around a few pages first, maybe I’ll check out the competition, but if the price is right and all other things being equal, why should I look elsewhere?

And the answer to that is that I might be thinking: “There’s something a bit wrong about this and I just can’t put my finger on it” or worse “Nothing seems to happen when I click here, where it says CLICK HERE”.

If you do it yourself, then what will you do when something goes wrong? Will you know where to tap? And if your website doesn’t start sales rolling in, what will you do about that? If the answer is start again from scratch, then think about how much time you might have lost in the interim – time your competitors have spent building their web presence.

And once it’s built, the job doesn’t end there. A good website is never finished – it should reflect the vitality and enterprise of your organisation, not leave people thinking “I wonder if they’re still in business?”

That’s not to mention the ongoing process of search engine optimisation. In a world with billions of web pages being created every single day, it’s madness to imagine you’re going to get to page one on Google with your first five-page website and even if you did, it’s madness to think you’ll stay there while others are busy creating more and better content for their sites.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to spend your time working on your business than on making a website you know is second best?

How many big name brands have got a website built in an afternoon by the office manager using Google Sites? You might say that’s a spurious remark, but really, if it was that good, why would you need to do anything else?

The simple fact is that all businesses want to distinguish themselves from their competition or at the very least stand shoulder to shoulder alongside the leading competitors. If all of your competitors have terrible websites then it will take a very small investment to exceed what they have achieved. And if all you do is equal their mediocrity, it will be equally easy for them to leapfrog you should they see the inherent advantages of hiring a professional.

So having given it some careful thought, I’m happy that my instinctive answer still seems like the right one. Amateur work achieves amateur results.

As one of my clients put it - if you think you think it's expensive hiring a professional, wait till you try hiring an amateur.

Thankfully I work in a field where most people don't need to be convinced of the value of my expertise. They just want to hire someone who knows where to tap, first time, every time.

Part Three: Do you do everything yourself?

If you’re the kind of person who doesn’t ever delegate anything unless you can possibly avoid it, then the words “do it yourself” are probably written right through the core of you like a stick of rock.

Personally, I’m a big believer in leaving stuff to the experts where possible. Because I value my life, I like my wiring to be fixed by a trained electrician and because I want to make the best of my finances, I trust my money to my financial adviser and my accountant.

Of course, sometimes you can’t afford an expert, as much as you’d like to. So you have a stab at tiling your own bathroom, say. And it might take a really long time and be a steep learning curve, but eventually, after a lot of swearing and a few broken tiles, you end up with something you can be proud of. It might be a bit amateurish, but you did it yourself.

But does the analogy translate to the business world?

Let’s look at a profession that’s not distantly related to mine – commercial photography.

Sure, we can all take a photograph. Most of us can even take one with our ‘phone these days. And occasionally, with favourable lighting and a compelling subject, they look really good. But that’s more luck than judgement. It takes a professional with the right equipment, experience, a talent for composition, training in a variety of techniques, a thorough knowledge of the technology and of course imagination to get results like that every time. They can take a picture of a cardboard box and make it look enticing. And more to the point, if they had taken the photo you were really pleased with, they’d have done it even better.

There are two big problems with doing it yourself in business.

First, you’re spending a lot of time on something that is not your job. So it’s taking you away from directly building your business and working for your customers.

And second, while you might be relatively proud of what you’ve achieved, you look at your competitors and there’s no disguising the superiority of their efforts.

But you might say “My customers won’t be able to tell the difference. They’re interested in price and service, not looks” and on the face of it, that’s true.

Part Two: Do you have any experience as a designer?

It’s not unreasonable to suggest that someone who has rarely, if ever, done something will be less good at it than someone who does it for a living.

Of course, there are arguments against this.

For one, the free website builder applications use templates designed by professionals.

For another, just because you’ve been doing something for years doesn’t actually mean you’re any good at it. You might just be very persistent.

So let’s address those two points.

First, the quality of the templates. Yes, your template might look fantastic. But design is about creating a fine balance between form and function that is conducive to a particular goal. In the case of making a website, that goal is usually either to make a sale or to initiate a sales lead.

With a website builder application, you start out with an attractive template, but then you obviously have to customise it to your own needs. That will immediately upset the fine balance established by the original designer. And it’s not all about being arty-farty. There will be some practical difficulties to overcome. For instance, the template might be designed for a white-on-black logo but yours needs to be black on white. So now you’ve got a big white box in one corner of the site that immediately ruins the look. Or the template might look great with a short-and-sweet company name at the top like “The IT Consultancy”, but your company name is The Association of British International Petrochemical Importers. And it really doesn’t want to fit.

Second, I might not be any good at my job. Maybe I’ve had a succession of unsatisfied clients who have ultimately left and gone elsewhere.

Well, no. I have been in business for 14 years and I have a number of clients who have been with me almost that long, including travel company the Sherpa Van Project, VIP hospitality company Mark Butler Associates, biochemical equipment suppliers Biogene, entertainer Allan Stewart and TV audience company SRO Audiences.

Anyway, according to Malcolm Gladwell’s 2008 book Outliers, the key to success in any field is to practice a task for about 10,000 hours. I started making websites for money in 1995, pretty much the first year anyone would even consider paying for such a thing. I’ve been doing it full time since 1996. Based on a 35 hour week, 48 weeks a year (and frankly, like most of you, I work a hell of a lot harder than that) for the last 17 years, I am now past the 28,500 hour mark. I’d say that qualifies me to claim some degree of competence.

Part One: You would say that, wouldn’t you?

I was asked recently what I thought about using free, template-based, do-it-yourself website builders as an alternative to paying me to design a business website.

My first instinct is to say “You should never do that – that’s only for amateurs” but the obvious response to that might be “Well, you would say that, wouldn’t you?”

Which would be fair comment.

So I figured I’d better give the matter some careful thought. Just what exactly do I offer that is better than doing it for yourself?

I want to start off by telling you a shaggy dog story that a lot of you will have heard before.

Ever heard the story of the giant ship engine that failed? The ship’s owners tried one expert after another, but none of them could figure out how to fix the engine.

Then they brought in an old man who had been fixing ships since he was a youngster. He carried a large bag of tools with him, and when he arrived, he immediately went to work. He inspected the engine very carefully, top to bottom.

Two of the ship’s owners were there, watching this man, hoping he would know what to do. When he went down to the engine room he felt the pipes with his hands, took out a stethoscope, listened to the pumps, and finally placed one of his hands on one of the gauges with his eyes closed. After looking things over, the old man reached into his bag and pulled out a small hammer. He gently tapped something. Instantly, the engine lurched into life. He carefully put his hammer away. The engine was fixed!

A week later, the owners received a bill from the old man for $10,000.

“What?!” the owners exclaimed. “He hardly did anything!”

So they wrote the old man a note saying, “Please send us an itemized bill.”

The man sent a bill that read:

Tapping with a hammer: $2.00

Knowing where to tap: $9,998.00

Obviously this story is designed to illustrate the value of expertise and the gulf between knowledge and effort.

So I have a few remarks to make on why you should make a distinction between a site built by a free, online web builder and one built for you by a professional who knows where to tap.

If you want to use video to help get more business, the simplest way to do it might seem like Youtube. You're almost certainly familiar with it already and quite possibly you've used it to upload your own personal video files to share with friends and family.

All you have to do is upload the video and use the helpful embed code provided to copy and paste it into your own web pages.

But there are pros and cons.

The Youtube pros are:

It's quick and easy to upload videos and you can edit them via your web browser

They could get found in a Youtube search as well as a Google search

The video streaming technology is fast and effective

People might post positive and supportive comments that will boost your credibility

If your videos are really popular, you could earn some money

The Youtube cons are:

People might post negative comments

Youtube may promote competitors alongside your video(s)

You can't customise the playback controls or remove the link to the Youtube website

You must have a Google+ account and accept Google's various terms and conditions

You can get around the risk of people posting negative comments by posting your video privately, which means that people will only find out about it if you share the link with them or if it's embedded in a web page, like a blog post or Linkedin. Of course, if you take this route, it won't be in the Youtube search index, so you lose one of the benefits along with one of the drawbacks.

If you want to go a different way, here are a handful of links you might find useful.
